US Mid-1940’s Folklore Music Map

The America Folklore music map with illustrated border(contains illustrations of musical instruments of various origins, from ancient to modern, some people and plants; the songs depict Bayou ballads, Creole folk songs, early California music, songs of the open range, Louisiana folk music, folk hymns, African American spirituals, and songs for children), created by a collaboration between opera singer and folklorist Dorothea Dix Lawrence and woodcut artist Harry Cimino in the mid-1940’s.

There are musical notation, beginning lyrics and title of folk tunes typical for Continental United States, images reflecting the culture and a portion of Canada and Mexico. Many people are dressed in their own styles related with the music in their own region.

“Explanation to Illustrations and Music on Map” gives short descriptions about the shaping of folk music.
